Not on my merit but by His Grace,

Two Gifts that Tell Easter Stories

This year’s Easter greeting poster presents two unique stories that evoke fond memories of gifts presented by students: a wooden artifact and an uncommon ostrich egg.

Wood artifact gift Crafted into Resurrection

In March 2025, my student Paulose Cherian, Vachaparambil, SB College B Com 1981–84, accompanied by his daughter Meri Paulose, S B MBA 2016–18 and her family, visited me and presented a cross-section of teak wood from his carpentry workshop.

During Easter 2025 I turned it around to the unpolished side, and inscribed ‘He is risen’ upon it, utilizing the piece as a representation of the toppled stone that once covered the tomb of Jesus during the resurrection. The imagery was well received by visitors to our home.

Sadly, Paulose passed away unexpectedly on July 11, 2025, following a two-week hospital stay. His funeral was attended by many, attesting to his lasting influence and wide circle of friends.

In his final days, he admitted on social media, “I am a victim of self-medication,” serving as a caution to others with similar habits.

Ostrich Egg: an Emblem of Hope

Eggs are traditionally associated with Easter, symbolizing new life and hope. While hen eggs are commonly displayed, this year I chose to display an ostrich egg, which was in my showcase for nearly two decades. The ostrich egg was gifted to me by S B alumnus P. P. Antony (M Sc Botany 1978–80) during his visit from South Africa to enrol his daughter for M Com in 2007. This was placed in the centre of the flower arrangement on the dining table.

The combination of the toppled stone and the ostrich egg created a striking visual for this year’s Easter celebration. The photo of the two was converted into this year’s Easter greetings card.

The two gifts, initially considered mere showpieces, ultimately proved to be significant and inspiring during Easter Sundays.

May Paulose Cherian rest in peace, and may the artifact stand as a lasting tribute to his memory.

I express sincere appreciation for the thoughtful gift from P P Antony.

May the assurance, hope, and inspiration of the risen Christ be with you all.

Kudos to the ingenuity to craft a log to an artefact to convey the message of eternal hope

  2. So sad to hear about untimely passing away of Poulose in the middle of his life . That is why following pslam prayer is very important “Psalm 102:24 (NIV)
“…: Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations.”
