The Story of St Berchmans College Post Office: A Heritage of Communication

14 January 2026 Manorama daily news of shutting down the St Berchmans College post office and the picture of post box pplaced on the compound wall

The above news served as the trigger for narrating:

The Story of St Berchmans College Post Office

St Berchmans College, Changanacherry Post Office , officially known as Changanacherry College, post office, was a prominent sub office (S.O.) under the Indian postal system, serving the pin code 686101. Established in the 1970s, this post office was initially housed in Moore House, a historic faculty residence at the rear end of the college campus. Prof C A Sheppard of the English Department was among its notable residents, adding to the legacy of the building.

Vital Communication Hub in Changanacherry

During its prime, the post office stood as an essential communication link, facilitating correspondence for students and faculty from St Berchmans and neighbouring Assumption College, as well as local residents. At a time when postal services were the backbone of communication, this facility played a crucial role in the academic and social fabric of the locality.

Lovers’ Corner: A Meeting Point Beyond Letters

St Berchmans College, primarily a men’s institution except for its postgraduate programmes, stands adjacent to Assumption College, which is exclusively for women. Strategically situated between these two colleges, the post office became more than just a hub for exchanging letters—it emerged as a convenient spot for students from both campuses to meet one another discreetly at their convenience.

Originally established to facilitate communication between people separated by distance, the college post office inadvertently began to serve another purpose: it enabled boys and girls from the neighbouring colleges to communicate directly. This informal gathering space soon earned the affectionate moniker ‘lovers’ corner’. Many couples who met in this space during their college days now look back on those moments with fond nostalgia.

Thus, the college post office was more than a channel for connecting people across distances; it also became the starting point for numerous relationships and life journeys, weaving itself into the social fabric and memories of the campus community.

[Beginning with the 2024–25 academic year, S.B. College and Assumption College transitioned to a co-educational system, admitting both boys and girls across all programmes]

Relocation and Modernisation: Adapting to Change

In 2009-10, the college leveraged an initial grant from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to construct a new ladies’ hostel on the Moore House campus. The post office was accordingly shifted to a building on the eastern side of the main campus, offering easy access to the back road. The inauguration of St Mary’s hostel in 2013 marked another milestone in the college’s evolution.

Decline and Closure: The Impact of Technology

With the rise of the internet and digital communication, the relevance of traditional ‘snail mail’ began to wane. The Central Government’s postal department initiated a rationalisation drive, leading to the closure of many sub post offices. The St Berchmans College sub post office was officially shut down in December 2025. Yet, as a tribute to its legacy, a postal box still stands on the college compound wall, marking the site where the post office once flourished.

Reflections on Heritage and Future Possibilities

The closure of this historic post office is a testament to the inevitable disruption caused by technological advancements. As the old yields to the new, it is important to reflect on what could have been done differently to preserve such a heritage site.

Innovative Ideas for Revitalisation

  1. Inspired by Sri Lanka’s model, the St Berchmans post office could have been conserved as a heritage landmark. Across Sri Lanka, vintage post offices have been repurposed into tourist attractions, allowing visitors to send postcards and discover the rich history behind each facility. Operating with minimal staff, these sites double up as museums, making them both economically and culturally viable.
Suggested by my nephew who visited Sri Lanka recently

2. Kerala is already embracing innovation with the launch of its first Gen Z post office at CMS College, Kottayam. Opened in December 2025, this youth-centric, tech-driven facility integrates digital services, QR code-enabled features, and modern amenities to engage younger users. Imagine a similar transformation for St Berchmans College, turning the site into a vibrant hub for students and the local community.

Why Preserve and Innovate College Post Offices?

Preserving college post offices as heritage or transforming them into tech-enabled youth spaces serves multiple purposes. These sites foster community engagement, offer educational opportunities, attract tourists, and bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. From sending postcards to learning about postal history, such spaces can become unique attractions while retaining their cultural identity.

Bridging Past and Future

The story of St Berchmans College Post Office is not merely about its closure but about the possibility of reinvention. Whether as a heritage museum, a tourist spot, or a Gen Z innovation centre, college post offices like this can continue to serve the community in new and meaningful ways. Let us cherish the legacy while embracing the future.

  1. The post office has to be preserved as reminiscent of an old landmark where the two walls of the two colleges, then male and female, became insignificant…

    1. Thanks E T Joseph.

  2. My final year attendance was 30 pc.No wonder,a major share of my absence might have been spent here.

Suggestion to preserve it as a heritage monument is very relevant considering the cultural and tourism potential it can generate for the following:
    1. With the opening of the proposed mall the locality will be the hub of many economic activities
    2. It can be continued as a philatelic counter or bureau with special cancellations and cards specifying the contributions of SB and Assumption Colleges to the society at large and eminent academic personalities who had availed the various postal services from the erstwhile Post Offfice.
3 . It can rekindle the nostalgic memories of former students of both Colleges .

    1. Thanks George M Mathew for your valid suggestion. Need the strong support of the postal department for its implementation

  4. Preserving it as a heritage centre, while integrating it into a modern digital communication hub, would beautifully bridge the past and the present. Such a space would not merely archive postal history but would resonate with human connections that once flourished there.
Reimagining the Post Office as a heritage and digital centre would allow former students to revisit a meaningful chapter of their youth, fostering emotional reunions and collective remembrance. In those tender years, even a simple meeting across colleges carried a unique sensitivity and charm—memories worth preserving for posterity

    1. Thanks Kurien Joseph.
The support of postal department is essential
